Canoe Believe this Table?

Picture
The Art of the Birch Bark ShadowboxIn a room dubbed "JPL East," the furniture must do more than just fill a footprint; it must tell a story. While our Great Room is anchored by stone and crystal, the Lodge Room is centered around a piece that captured my heart the moment I saw it: a miniature Birch Bark Canoe table.
The Provenance: From Montana to the RidgeIdentified as a signature piece from Big Sky Carvers of Manhattan, Montana—a studio renowned for museum-quality sporting art—this table is a collector's dream. I acquired it from a downsizing collector in British Columbia; her reluctance to part with it was the first clue to its unique value and the craftsmanship held within.
A Shadowbox of HeritageThis isn't merely a coffee table; it is a meticulously preserved narrative of the Great Outdoors. Protected under a glass top, the scale-model birch bark canoe is a masterclass in traditional construction, featuring authentic lashing at the bow and stern with thin cedar ribs lining the hull.
The interior is curated with a collection of high-mountain artifacts:
  • The Tools: A miniature hand-carved paddle and a matching wood fishing rod, complete with a hand-knotted net.
  • The Pelt: A soft beaver pelt—a silent nod to the fur-trade history that shaped the Canadian frontier.
  • The Spirit: A delicate dreamcatcher, adding a layer of cultural depth and protection to the "vessel."
The Intersection of Iron and BarkThe base of the table provides the "Executive" finish. Unlike the more common twig-style bases, this canoe is supported by a sophisticated wrought-iron frame with scroll-foot detailing. This intentional design choice allows the piece to bridge the gap between the rugged "Spirit of the Rockies" and the formal elegance of our estate.
A Permanent PortNow resting as the focal point of the Lodge Room, the Big Sky Canoe has found its permanent port. Surrounded by our Jasper Park Lodge chairs and the warmth of the fireplace, it stands as a daily reminder that the best rooms aren't just designed—they are curated with pieces that carry a soul of their own.

"A curated blend of rustic textures and reimagined retro—this evolving space balances lodge tradition with modern personality."

    The Stewards

Lodge & Legacy is the shared life’s work of Rick and Tanya. Our journey within Our Heritage Lodge has been defined by a deep respect for craftsmanship and the belief that a true sanctuary is built, not bought. Rick is the master of the "Resolve." A visionary with rare mechanical and architectural skill, he personally designed and hand-built our 40x60 Carriage House—the foundation of our evolution. His ability to translate a vision into timber and stone is the reason we were able to take on a project of this magnitude. Tanya is the curator of the "Grace." With an eye for interior artistry and heritage provenance, she breathes soul into the structures Rick builds. Tanya ensures that every 1904 brick and salvaged artifact tells a story, turning our home into a curated experience of quiet reflection. Together, we are the stewards of this mountain sanctuary—uncovering its beauty through Rick’s hands and Tanya’s heart.

A NOTE FROM LODGE & LEGACY

Thank you for joining us on this journey of restoration.
Lodge & Legacy didn't begin as a grand mission; it began with a house we simply wanted to call home. We didn't yet know the magnitude of what lay beneath the surface, nor the historic significance of the 1904 masonry that would eventually define our path.

As we moved in, the stories began to unveil themselves—one brick, one beam, and one mechanical overhaul at a time. We have learned that restoration, much like dance, requires immense patience for the process and a deep respect for form.
We welcome the rigor of the work, knowing that preserving a legacy is a marathon, not a sprint. We are honored to share these stories with you as we steward this sanctuary toward its next hundred years.
