The fourth instalment of my Jasper Chronicles series features a true heavyweight:
​The magnificent High-Back Old Hickory "Feather" chair. This was my husband’s first pick and an absolute "must-have" from the JPL collection—and he was 100% right. This chair is a masterpiece.

The "Old Guard" of the Signature Cabins
There are rooms at the Jasper Park Lodge where history isn't just made; it's whispered. The Point and Outlook Cabins have hosted royalty and world leaders for decades, and this High-Back Old Hickory chair had a front-row seat to all of it.
While the "Athabasca Swirl" stools I featured in Part 3 represented the modern "Class of 1972" energy for the lodge lounges, this High-Back is the "Old Guard." It carries an air of rugged elegance that was reserved for the elite Signature Cabins, where the furniture had to match the scale of the mountains outside the window.

A Coordinated 1970s Vision
When I brought this piece home, I prepared for "emergency surgery," but a closer look revealed something incredible. The upholstery work—the precision of the underside stapling and the perfectly neat edges—mirrors the exact "DNA" of the Athabasca Swirl stools.
This wasn't a later recovery; it was a meticulously coordinated 1970s commission. It’s clear the Lodge had a grand design vision: the "Swirl" for the river-inspired spaces, and this "Feather" tapestry for the quiet luxury of the Point and Outlook. It’s professional-grade artistry designed to bridge the gap between the Lodge's rustic roots and the refined expectations of its most prestigious guests.

The Preservation Process
Because this chair was so well-respected in its "Signature" life, it didn't need a transformation—it just needed a homecoming. We opted for a "Zero-Chemical" approach, treating the thirsty hickory bark to a deep oiling that restored its rich, dark luster.
For the tapestry, we used a gentle steam clean to lift away the dust of a thousand mountain sunsets without disturbing a single thread of the original weave. The only liberty we are taking is an invisible one: we will carefully tuck a fresh layer of high-density foam underneath the original fabric to ensure it remains the most sought-after seat in the house.

The Gold Standard of Authenticity
This isn’t just a guess; this chair carries the official Old Hickory metal tag on its inside back rung. While these tags were a hallmark of mid-century production, the pristine condition of this 1970s "Feather" textile proves that some things are simply built to last a century.

'The High-Back Feather Chair is a study in mountain heritage. Though this specific frame was crafted in the 1970s, its silhouette dates back to the 1930s—a design born for the great fireplace lounges of the Rockies. It’s more than a chair; it’s a 90-year-old design vision that has been the silent backdrop to decades of Jasper memories.'

The "Feather" pattern was designed to bring the spirit of the Jasper wilderness inside. Looking at the tapestry up close, the detail is unmistakable—cascading feathers that pay tribute to the eagles and ospreys that soar over the Athabasca. It perfectly complements the raw hickory bark, creating a piece that feels like it was plucked right from the mountain air.

After decades of hosting world leaders and forest views, this High-Back is finally "retired"—though in our home, retirement looks a lot like a fresh coat of oil and the best seat by the fire. Not a bad second act for a Jasper legend.
